A Study of the Relationship between Authentic Materials and Higher Order Thinking Skills in English as a Second Language Learning

    The research studied the relationship between authentic materials and higher order thinking skills amongst undergraduate ESL learners. It further aimed to study how different aspects, factors,perceptions and perspectives support or reject the notion of using authentic materials for the development of higher order thinking skills in the language teaching and learning process. The researcher adopted an interpretivist approach and inductive research method design to execute the research and to find out the answer to the research questions that to what extent the use of authentic materials in English language teaching and learning had been effective for the development of thinking skills and abilities. Therese archer made use of a qualitative approach for the data collection. All the qualitative data was analyzed and interpreted through thematic analysis. In conclusion, authentic materials can be beneficial to developing a higher order thinking skills among ESL learners.
